Open studio

Virtual Concert
Private Singing Lessons – Extracurricular

Dear Students and Parents,

It is my pleasure to welcome you, and share with you, the Virtual Open Studio that we prepared in the final months of the 2019-2020 school year, from home.

At the beginning of the school year 2019-20, we began working on improving vocal technique and preparing the songs.

We also worked with some students on the preparation of their practical graded music exams at the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

The moment our school transitioned to online lessons, some of my students decided to continue with this new lesson format.

With the help of current digital tools, we were able to effectively continue vocal technique lessons, as well as sight-singing and ear training. This online environment was very beneficial as it also helped to introduce my students to the use of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) such as GarageBand, Soundtrap and BandLab (a web-based DAWs) for recording their voices, the first step in the musical production workflow.

The following is a small sample of the work we have designed.

The publication of this content has been authorized by the parents of the students.
Many thanks for their support in this project!

 Enjoy! –

ALICIA CAPREZ

Alicia is the newest student in singing class. During the school year, she decided to prepare for the ABRSM exam. This piece is part of the ABRSM Syllabus for Grade 1.

In this virtual open studio, she shows her creativity by PRODUCING HER VIDEOS HERSELF.

  • Orange and yellow and brown  by l.Marsh

LISA SAM-PROTIN

In 2019-20, Lisa was in her third year of singing class. Her preferred repertoire  is in  the pop category. In 2019, , she also decided to prepare and take the ABRSM Grade 1 exam, obtaining the “Distinction” score.

The first piece is a song which forms part of the program for her next ABSRM Grade 2 exam. It is a well-known part of the musical “Oliver!

  • I’d do anything (from Oliver!) by L.Bart (1930-1999)

The second song is Lisa’s choice. During the second piece, the protagonist (the singer Ms. Beer) talks about a toxic relationship. She also talks about pressure from society and social media that forced her to grow up too fast and to be physically perfect. She ends the song with a powerful line: “you are the one who is always there for me,” which is a message to her community and her fans who left a positive impact on her fame.

  • Dear society by M. Beer

GABRIEL LEGROS

Gabriel completed his second year in singing class during the 2019-20 school year and has taken the 1st and 2nd Grade exams of the ABRSM obtaining the “Distinction” score on both. His preferred repertoire is mostly Art songs, but he also likes to explore all the possibilities of his voice, through practicing beatboxing in his spare time.

The pieces that he sings to us today are part of the ABRSM Syllabus.

This school year, Gabriel will be  preparing for the Grade 4 exam, which includes works by Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) and Robert Schumann (1810-1856), in Italian and German, respectively.

Along with his singing classes, he studies piano in Mr. Carretero’s class and prepares for the ABRSM piano exam.

  • The Owls by P. Jenkins

  • The Jaguar (from Yanomano) A. Conlon/P. Rose

ALICIA, LISA, and GABRIEL

We were able to build two small polyphonic pieces from home, with the help of current digital tools.

The first song is an old English round for three voices.

  • By the waters of Babylon Traditional English round (ca. 1786)

The last piece of this program is a work by Mozart.

This is one of his four notturni (a little night music or serenade), composed around 1788 and published in Vienna in 1803.

  • Più non si trovano KV. 549 by W.A Mozart (1756-1791)

Bravo, and thank you to these talented young singers!
